People Helping People Blanket Drive
Winter and cold weather is fast approaching and Karen Cannady wants to make sure that those in need of a blanket will have one. Learn more about this local hero and why she has chosen to make a difference in the city of Detroit.
Where do you call home in the Detroit area?
"I grew up on the north side of Detroit."
Your educational background?
"I graduated from Mackenzie High and I went to Wayne County Community college; studies Culinary Arts."
How did you get involved in helping the community?
"When I was a young girl I knew I had a gift to help people in need. I helped serve in soup kitchens. During the Christmas season my church would feed the homeless. Just this past year, a few of my friends went down to Third Street to pass out of water and food to the homeless. I never like people to be treated unjustly. I know God put us here to serve each other, for all man kind."
What inspires you?
".. For years God has put on my heart to help the homeless. I always wanted to go out of the country for the mission, I hear in my spirit to start at home.
Anything else you would like to share?
"I work inside of one of the G.M. Plants and I started a blanket drive. This is the second year. Last year we collected 100 blanket. This year l am hoping for 200 blankets."
"What I do is take the blankets down to 3535 Third Street and district to the homeless on the street. Last year it was a great experience."
"I wanted to mention the UAW local 174 GMCCA Willow Plt 58 let me use their plant to collect the blankets, and the GM management helped me to collect and distribute the blankets."
