Tucked away next to Herkimer's on 2916 Lyndale Ave. South is the unassuming building for VFW post 246. From the street the best kept Karaoke secret in Uptown looks at first glance like a library and certainly nothing like the free wielding, cheap drink music venue that it is. "Music venue" may be somewhat of a stretch, but try telling that to any one of the dozens of local performers taking the "stage" on any given weekend night. Last Saturday was no different as at least several off key performers dove into such sing along favorites as "Build Me Up Buttercup" and "What's Up" (by 4 Non Blondes). Though the notes weren't all there, the spirit definitely was.
Entering this unlikely Karaoke venue is done in round about fashion only. Start by facing Herkimer's entrance, now go twenty feet right to the entrance of a parking lot. Walk through said parking lot and take a right at the end of the building. At this point there will be a smoker or two and a middle aged man huddled around a waiting to hold the door open for any incoming patrons. Walk in the entrance, through a long library-like hall until you come to the entrance of the bar. There all newcomers will be asked to sign the guest book (after you're properly ID'ed of course) and to the left, just beyond the bathrooms, is the where the musical magic happens.
This well lit, one room bar is filled with local twenty something hipsters and older, karoake enthusiasts all crowded up to the counters where some of the cheapest drinks in Uptown can be had ($3 domestic taps...all the time). The walls are adorned with the usual dive bar fare with the notable exception of the Veterans of Foreign Wars seal and other allusions to the fact that yes, this is a VFW, yes you are hearing a rendition of that Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow song sung by two senior citizens, and yes it is much better then this version.
Take this bar in with a bunch of good friends and a bunch of pitchers, they're the best drink deal in this bargain drinkers haven.
Karaoke is 9-close every Thu. - Sat. but Call (612) 823-6233 for more information.
