Karamu is seeking six African American male actors and one African American female actor to appear in the Gavin Lawrence play “Cut Flowers” that will be produced from October 25 through November 17, 2013 and directed by Terrence Spivey. The auditions will be held at 2355 East 89th Street, Cleveland, Ohio.
One audition date still remains this Wednesday, September 4, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Those wishing to audition are asked to prepare two contrasting monologues lasting no more than two minutes each. In addition each person auditioning will be asked to do a cold reading from the script. A headshot and resume is also asked for. This is a non-equity production.
About the Play
In an upscale Washington DC flower shop, six men and one courageous woman debate all aspects of being African American right now. As the play unfolds, various subjects are brought up for debate including; slavery, aids, oral sex, crack cocaine, religion and homophobia. As the debates reach a boiling point, each person is forced to confront their contradictions and realize their true beliefs on the matters at hand.
This is the third production of this particular work having received rave reviews during its world premiere at the Chicago Theatre Company. The play received five Theatre Alliance Awards including the Lorraine Hansberry Award for Best Writing of a Play. The play contains adult themes and content.
The work is currently in pre-production as a feature film with Harry Lennix.

Kyle (early 40’s to 50’s) assistant cut flower buyer who is in charge of deliveries
Brian (30’s) cut flower worker and delivery man with young son
Ronnie (20’s) cut flower worker and delivery man with two young sons
Kevin (30’s) Cut flower worker with a college degree
Mark (30’s) cut flower worker with young daughter
Paul (late 30’s to 40’s) cut flower and deliver man, former musician with a drinking problem and a teenage daughter
Rhonda (30’s to 40’s) switchboard operator for Benson’s with four children. character is heard but not seen
All selected actors will be required to participate in Cut Flower training during the rehearsal period.
Rehearsals will start the week of Sept 16, 2013, and will consist of a 6 week rehearsal schedule, 3-6 time per week.
