Rap superstar Kanye West has surfaced as having well connected friends in of all places Kazakhstan, and this is paying off well for him. Billboard reported on Sept. 2, 2013, "Kanye West Pulls Out the Hits For Lucrative Kazakhstan Gig." Over the weekend it has been reported West performed at the wedding of Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev's grandson. He was paid millions for this performance.
West put on a spectacular show which included his big hits, including "Can't Tell Me Nothing", for his private performance at the Hotel Royal Tulip in the capital Almaty. Nazarbayev has served as the first and only president of the central Asian country, which won its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The highly controversial leader has personally become a billionaire during his time in office, and he’s been hit with many allegations of corruption.
TMZ also covered this story dealing with Kanye West being paid millions of dollars this weekend to play a private gig in Kazakhstan. It has been rumored West was paid about $3 million for this performance. Although Kazakhstan's extremely wealthy president is considered by some to be a dictator who fixes elections, there doesn't appear to be anything illegal about West accepting an invitation to be paid such a high fee for his performance. This sure is an intriguing situation with all of the ingredients of a dramatic action movie in Hollywood.
