He also talked about how he would have wanted his daughter to respond if she had been in Swift's position.
As West told Ryan Seacrest on October 29, 2013, "you know what? I would not want some crazy drunk rockstar cutting my daughter off also. But, my daughter would 100% also be like, 'Yes, Beyoncé did have the best video.' That’s what my daughter would do!"
The rapper has apologized multiple times for the incident, though he still couldn't resist getting a few digs in. As he told Seacrest, he did talk to Swift "right before she was going to do a song based on it."
He also recalled that they "wouldn't get her on the phone and we were trying to do all this Oprah stuff because it's all this media blitz with the perception like, 'Oh my god! Your career is over.'"
And although he likely regrets interrupting Swift's moment, he seems to stand by his belief that Beyoncé's video was better. As he commented, "there still hasn’t been a better video … than a Beyoncé video. And that’s what people hated me the most for. The perception — ‘This doesn’t look good. That doesn’t look good.’ — But I’m not here to try to be the most likeable guy on the planet. I’m here to make things easier for people with the creativity I have."
At one point, the "Watch the Throne" rapper also seemed to take back his apology. As he told New York Times over the summer, "I don't have one regret...If anyone's reading this waiting for some type of full-on, flat apology for anything, they should just stop reading right now."
He also suggested that he may have given into peer pressure to apologize. As he commented, "yeah, I think that I have like, faltered, you know, as a human. My message isn't perfectly defined. I have, as a human being, fallen to peer pressure."
As for Swift, although her career has taken off splendidly since the VMA incident, she couldn't resist taking a few digs at the rapper herself.
After the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards nominations were announced over the summer, the "22" singer tweeted, "Two VMA nominations!! If you vote and get us one, I promise to keep a firmer grip on the mic this time ;)"
