According to a New York Daily News article on Saturday, singer-songwriter-record producer Kanye West has been charged with attempted grand theft and misdemeanor battery due to an altercation he had with a paparazzo named Daniel Ramos at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in July of this year. The arraignment has reportedly been scheduled for Oct. 10, but West does not have to appear at that time if he has an attorney. If found guilty of the charges, West could be put jailed for a year or fined $2,000.
The charges came against West on Friday, and they are related to a confrontation he had on July 19, 2013, according to a Los Angeles city attorney spokesman named Frank Mateljan. Ramos says that West lunged at him, punched him, and then wrestled him to the ground at the airport. The incident caused injury to his hip, according to Ramos. TMZ is reporting that Ramos has hired Gloria Allred – the high-profile attorney who has taken many cases in recent times that have made headlines, including women who have alleged sexual harassment from former presidential candidate Herman Cain and others. The lawsuit against West that Ramos is having filed via Allred alleges battery, assault, and negligence. Though the Los Angeles prosecutors refused to press felony charges against the entertainer, city authorities are charging him with the misdemeanors.
There is a video of the altercation between the two which was recorded by TMZ. In the video, West is seen walking past a number of photographers as he stared specifically at Ramos who was trying to talk to him. As West is seen reaching his vehicle, he dove into Ramos.
