On Thursday, Brian A. Jackson, 28, was formally arraigned in Sedgwick County District Court after he reportedly beat a pit bull puppy to death with a baseball bat.
On Monday, Wichita officers were called to a duplex in the 2600 block of East Elm, after a woman reported that her neighbor had killed a puppy.
Officers discovered the tiny corpse, as well as a bloody bat.
Jackson has been charged with cruelty to animals. He is currently being held at the Sedgwick County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Jackson's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 5.
Jackson has requested a court-appointed lawyer.
If Jackson is convicted, he could face a fine up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.
The penalty for animal cruelty in Kansas is among the most lenient in the entire country, the charge is only considered a misdemeanor.
