Kansas used a 15-2 run to open the game to set the tone for a KU win over Texas Tech in a 91-63 quarterfinal victory at the 2013 Big 12 Championship tournament on Thursday, March 14, 2013. Texas Tech would climb back in narrowing the lead to 2 points at the 3:10 mark in the first half, but KU would put together a push at the end of the half and the start of the second half to blow away Texas Tech at the final buzzer.
From KUAthletics.com, Kansas set the Big 12 Championship standard with a 66 percent shooting effort, which was the Jayhawks' top-shooting effort on the season. Ben McLemore finished with a game-high 24 points. Rio Adams joined McLemore as the only Jayhawks in double-figures with a career-high 11 points, while Jamari Traylor posted a new career-high with seven points.
KU lead in every statistical category, but it is interesting to note that Kansas committed 17 turnovers allowing 25 points. This effort may slide against a team like Texas Tech, but when Kansas faces Iowa State who Kansas had to take to overtime in each game they won, it won’t be as easy to dismiss that many turnovers.
If Kansas can shoot 66 percent from the floor every night, then turnovers and rebounding don’t really matter as much. The likelihood of KU being able to achieve such a lofty shooting percentage on a consistent basis is pretty slim. The Jayhawks need to buckle down and revisit the basics of rebounding, ball control and taking smart shots in the paint. Iowa State will not be a pushover by any means.
With the victory, Kansas (27-5) advances to the semifinals of the 2013 Big 12 Championship for the 15th time in the 17-year history of the event. The Jayhawks will take on Iowa State, a 73-66 winner over Oklahoma, at 6:30 P.M., Friday March 15, 2013, at the Sprint Center.
