Kansas Jayhawk Basketball slides past Texas Tech, 60-46 (Video)

It wasn’t the commanding start and win that Kansas would have wanted Saturday afternoon, January 12, 2013, but Texas Tech was going to make sure that the 60-46 win wasn’t going to be easy. Kevin Young scored 12 points in the final 20 minutes to help the Jayhawks defeat Texas Tech inside United Spirit Arena.

Kansas came out and shot poorly, got out rebounded and looked sluggish In its first Big 12 Conference game away from home. The Jayhawks made just five field goals, with a 61 percent shooting mark (14-for-23) in the second half for its 13th-straight victory. Luckily KU won the turnover battle and made free throws when they got the chance, which was 26 attempts. Texas Tech’s mission was to muddle the game by slowing the tempo down and getting in the way of the Kansas offense by limiting fast breaks. That philosophy worked for the first half, but Kansas still managed 12 fast break points in a game where they only scored 60, that’s a large margin.

Senior Travis Releford missed just once on the afternoon, recording 12 points on a 4-for-5 effort. Senior center Jeff Withey and redshirt freshman guard Ben McLemore put four Jayhawks in double-figures for the ninth time this season with 12 and 10, respectively.

For Texas Tech (8-6), junior guard Jamal Williams Jr. was the only Red Raider in double-digits with 11 points as KU held the home team to a season-low 46 points.

For the entire first half and leading into the second half, the Red Raiders stayed with the Jayhawks and swapped the lead a few times. Their muck-it-up style of game worked well until 5 minutes left in the game when Kansas overcame TTU’s game plan and went on a 6-0 run putting them up by 58-40, pretty much locking up the game.

Check out all of the final stats.

The next game for the Jayhawks is Monday, January 14 at 8 P.M. on ESPN’s Big Monday against the Baylor Bears.
