Kansas Jayhawk Basketball perseveres past Hilton magic beating Iowa State 77-70

Kansas has flipped the switch with it’s third straight Big 12 win over Iowa State on January 13, 2014. Iowa State (14-2, 2-2 Big 12) led for a mere 12 seconds all night en route to its second loss at home in the last two years. Both losses have been to the Jayhawks. Before entering Big 12 conference play, KU went 4-4 with losses to unranked teams on the road and at home. Many fanys were scratching their hands wondering when all of this talent is going to click and live up to its potential. The Big 12 conference has appeared to bring out the best in this Jayhawk team as they have started 3-0 in league play and remain the only undefeated team in league play.

Against Iowa State, Kansas Junior guard Naadir Tharpe chalked up a career-high 23 points in front of the 14,484 sold-out crowd 14,484 in attendance. He also tied a career-high in rebounds (6) and field goals (7). Freshman guard Andrew Wiggins recorded his second career double-double in the win with 17 points and 19 rebounds. That rebound total fell just one shy of the freshman career rebounding record held by Eric Chenowith (20 vs. Texas A&M, 1/14/98). For the second-straight game, freshman center Joel Embiid completed his evening one rebound shy of a double-double, contributing 16 points and nine boards. He became the only player to rack up five blocks against the Cyclones in 2013-14 and led KU with a pair of steals.

Kansas led the rebounding edge by a margin of 53 to ISU’s 36 and held ISU to 31 percent shooting. KU will need to keep up the defense and rebounding to keep a stranglehold on the Big 12 to achieve a 10th year of winning the conference title.

Kansas and Oklahoma State will play at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 18, at 3 P.M. on CBS.
