The margin of victory was 17 points on Monday night, January 14, 2013, but it wasn’t an easy game. Either the Baylor Bears put up a heck of a fight making life difficult for the Kansas offense, or KU isn’t firing on all cylinders.
The price of victory also may have cost Kansas dearly with Ben McLemore going down late with an apparent ankle injury. Replay shows McLemore going for a cut move in the paint, only to land awkwardly on the ankle, twisting it and lobbing a half-hearted pass as he fell to the floor. Trainers assisted him to the locker room and no reports have been officially issued.
Even while going down in a heap, McLemore managed to lead all scorers with 17 points. It’s a good thing, too, as the rest of the Kansas offense was having issues with crisp passing and running smooth plays. Baylor played tough on defense, but for most of the game, the KU offense was disjointed and only bolstered by fast breaks and steals.
Don’t miss the fact the KU defense came to play. Recording 13 blocks, 9 alone in the first half, this Kansas defense showed up. Kansas remains in the lead in the Big 12 with a 4-0 record as Baylor gets its first conference loss.
Kansas edged the Bears by 5 rebounds, but fought hard to try and overtake them in turnovers with 14 to Baylor’s 16.
Kansas is playing hard, but it’s not playing its best basketball. The Hawks will need to buckle down and try to run their offense more on the half court possessions and eliminate turnovers. Jeff Withey will need to continue his block party while McLemore leads the scoring.
Up next is Texas on January 19 at Texas, 1 P.M. central time on CBS.
