Tomorrow marks the beginning of the country's largest independent music festival, South by Southwest (SXSW). If you are reading this and mysteriously don't know what SXSW is, it is basically a huge gathering of independent (and some mainstream) artists in Austin, TX, where literally thousands of bands perform, network, and hope to launch their musical careers.

This year more bands than ever will represent Kansas City at the festival, thanks in large part to the Midwasteland Takeover, a joint effort by Czar Bar, the Record Bar, Midwest Music Foundation, Gnarly Enterprises, and Gusto Lounge. The Midwasteland Takeover is a showcase that will run Thursday through Saturday at the Canvas Bar & Gallery in Austin.

A second Kansas City-based showcase is sponsored by Also, the local record labels The Record Machine and Anodyne Records are hosting a showcase at the Jackalope, a bar in Austin.

All of these showcases are "unofficial" SXSW events, but they still should expect to draw big numbers. It may seem silly, but many people from the Kansas City area will probably at least stop by these shows.

If you are making the 740-mile journey to Austin, you had better leave tonight.

Here is a list of Kansas City/Lawrence bands who will be playing SXSW 2010. Feel free to leave a comment of any bands I may have left out.
