There is no "I" in Team, that is the performing arts slogan professed by the stage performers of one of the hottest burlesque troupes in Kansas City. Examiner.com met with the talented crew recently at Side Pockets bar and grill in Blue Springs, Mo. We decided to relax, talk and play some friendly pool while Examiner.com conducted the interview. Annie Cherry of the performing arts troupe started out initially with one member(herself), who started out in the KC area with the troupe Burly-Q Girly Crew (a neo-burlesque troupe in 2005), with shows at the Student Union in the West Bottoms. After a few stints Annie Cherry started to hold burlesque classes in the City of Motion dance academy in 2008. Little did she know life-long friends and team members would be extracted from the pool of participants. Meeting that burlesque criteria were the aptly stage named Kitty Von Minx and Honey Valentine and KCSOB was borne. At this time Annie had 3 of 7 core members that now form the Kansas City Society of Burlesque(KCSOB). Do you know when burlesque first started? Click on this link and leave your answer or start a discussion when it first became of age in Kansas City? KCSOB became of age when most of the other members joined shortly thereafter; such as: Veronica Voodoo, Violet Vendetta, Artemus Vulgaris & Daisy Bucket.
Slowly but surely the KCSOB has been picking up steam and a progressive following of performers and audience. They appeared in the the show "My Girdle Is Killing Me," that was featured in the KC Fringe Fest during the summer 2010, to mostly sold out audiences at Crosstown Station.Veronica Voodoo who is the statuesque blonde who joined in 2008 after college at Central Missouri State, says that she remembers when they had a visiting burlesque performer from New York, who stated that "Burlesque is standup comedy & dance." And she felt that was a good description of her artform, that normally plays to a 75% audience of women. Heard though casual conversations the troupe agreed that women take to it, like a moth to a flame. Because their troupe isn't laden with the model, movie star actor /performers, but with intelligent scriptwriters, producers who are your normal everyday woman or man, that they can relate to, more readily.
Artemus Vulgaris is the other half of Annie Cherry, of KCSOB . They are offically engaged to be married next year in 2011. Artemus stated that his background includes a doctorate in street-busking, mime, dance, singing, writing, you name it I've probably done it, studying my craft. Which is a general consensus among the performing arts core group. They recently finished KCSOB Winter Festivus Bash and are looking towards their January 15th show in 2011, a Classic Burlesque Revue.
It will be held at Korruption 1717 West 9th. KCMO at 10pm, more details to follow and you can purchase their new glossy calendar from any of the performers for $15.00 or order by website. www.kcsob.com
