Game recap: The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Detroit scored three runs. Brennan Boesch doubled scoring Miguel Cabrera and Ryan Raburn. Brandon Inge singled scoring Boesch.
Detroit scored another run in the eighth on a Johnny Damon double that scored Austin Jackson. The Royals would score two runs in the ninth, but Detroit ultimately shut them down.
Max Scherzer (12-10) went 7.2 innings giving up two hits and striking out eight. Kyle Davies (8-11) took the loss for the Royals.
Good news: Ryan Raburn went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Scherzer, Ryan Perry, Phil Coke pitched a four hitter.
Bad news: Alex Avila both go 0 for 3. Will Rhymes and Jhonny Peralta went 0 for 4.
Tiger tales: The Tigers entered tonight having won 48 games at home this season, three wins shy of matching the Comerica Park record of 51 wins, established in 2009.
Miguel Cabrera belted a solo home run last night against Kansas City and he has now compiled 45 doubles, 35 home runs, and 120 RBI for the Tigers this season. He joins Hank Greenberg as the second player in club history to accumulate at least 45 doubles, 35 home runs and 120 RBI during a regular season. Greenberg accomplished the feat three times, doing so in 1935, 1937, 1940.
Austin Jackson entered tonight needing two more runs scored to become the ninth player in major league history since 1901 to collect at least 100 runs scored, 170 hits, 30 doubles, 10 triples and 20 stolen bases as a rookie. Jackson would join Joe Jackson (1911), Roy Johnson (1929), Evar Swanson (1929), Barney McCosky (1939), Minnie Minoso (1951), Juan Samuel (1984), Nomar Garciaparra (1997), and Hanley Ramirez (2006 in accomplishing the feat.
Next-up: The Twins come to Comerica for a three game series. Francisco Liriano (14-8, 3.44 ERA, left-hander) will face Justin Verlander (17-8, 3.46 ERA, right-hander). Liriano is 38-30 in his career and 6-1 in his last ten games. He last faced Detroit September 1 and had a no-decision.
