Kansas City Film Fest opens at new home Alamo Drafthouse

It’s that time of year again. April. When Kansas City brings filmmakers from around the world to our local arena in celebration of cinematic innovation and the independent spirit.

April replaces the upheaval within the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee as it searched for a new home and sponsor for the annual festival with sanctity and peace knowing KCFilmFest has a fresh place with The Alamo Drafthouse Downtown.

Running April 10 through 14, KCFilmFest 2013 will be entirely housed in the Alamo Drafthouse facilities, featuring films from local to international elegance, including the Sundance Film Festival smash “Twenty Feet From Stardom,” award-winning Sundance and SXSW film “Teacher,” the much awaited fun documentary, “Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony,” and Kansas City’s very own “We Are Superman,” the documentary about erasing the geographical and psychological divisiveness of Troost Ave.

Opening night kicks off with a Lifetime Achievement Award, accepted by writer/director Justin Schwarz on behalf of Stuart Margolin at “The Discoverers” screening. Mayor Sly James gives opening remarks for the KCFilmFest first screening of “We Are Superman,” and John de Lancie from Star Trek fame will participate in a live Q&A for “Bronies”.

Other KCFilmFest attractions, outside of the free parties and guest appearances, include the family friendly Reel Spirit Young Filmmakers Showcase and the second annual KCWIFT Screenwriting Contest Finalist staged readings.

The KCFilmFest offers delicacies for a myriad of tastes, counting the $5 matinee screenings. Parking for the festival will be available at Costentino’s grocer with a stamped ticket by Alamo Drafthouse customer service. Festival tickets and passes are available for purchase at the Alamo Drafthouse website.

KCFilmFest, presented by the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee, is a juried annual festival with the mission of “unit[ing] the Kansas City area educational, cultural and film organizations to celebrate local independent filmmaking, to enhance opportunities for filmmakers to develop their craft and art, and to increase the public’s awareness and support of local filmmaking as a cultural and economic asset.”
