Kang Wong jaywalking: Man beaten for jaywalking, senior citizen arrested after

A Kang Wong jaywalking charge was filed against an 84-year-old man this weekend in New York City after the man was allegedly caught illegally crossing the street, then beaten and arrested. The story sparked a national outcry after news arrived that police had brutally attacked the Asian senior citizen — who does not speak English — and left him in need of hospitalization just for simply jaywalking. NewsMax gives what details are known on this developing crime report involving the NYPD this Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.

The shocking incident apparently started when 84-year-old Kang Wong was jaywalking on the Upper West Side of New York City. Police suddenly stopped him and trying giving him a ticket for the well-known urban infraction. However, the senior citizen ended up in a local medical center less than an hour later following a beating from law enforcement officers.

Witnesses to the crime alleged that some sort of physical altercation began between Wong and the police after Wong tried walking away when police were giving him the ticket. The 84-year-old man, who does not speak English, was said to grow “distraught.” A fight seemingly broke out, as the elderly man was soon left with a bloody face, arrested, and then rushed to a hospital room — these consequences coming from a man crossing the light.

"The guy didn’t seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank [where the officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket," Fordham University law student Ian King, 24, told the Post.

"The man didn’t seem to understand, and he started walking away," King continued. "The cop tried to pull him back, and that’s when he began to struggle with the cop."

"As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere," King noted.

Following the Kang Wong jaywalking attack, the senior citizen was said to have suffered a number of minor cuts to the face and a bloody lip. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, then ordered to the 24th Precinct police station for formal processing.

“The 84-year-old man’s son, an attorney who refused to give his name, arrived at the police station Sunday evening where he discussed the incident with reporters after claiming the NYPD had given him the run around inside the precinct.”

"The cops are playing games. They won’t tell me what he’s being charged with," the son said in a statement to reporters. Then I learned … Oh, great! Beating up on an 84-year-old man for jaywalking."

Details on exactly what happened in this seemingly unnecessary crime and subsequent beating are still forthcoming.
