Kajeet, a relatively unknown but innovative Silicon Valley startup financed by Rick Bolander, a San Francisco Bay Area venture capitalist (and reportedly a lover of new Oakland eateries), has rolled out a new upgrade to its already popular service. But what, is Kajeet and what is that service?
Kajeet advertises itself as having the "phone that kids want," although it may really be the phone kids' parents want them to have. The company website reports that it has these basic services, some of which are new:
Free parental controls. Allow the calls and texts you want and block those you don't. Decide when the phone can and can't be used. Create separate allowances to decide who pays for what (you or your kid). Limit what your kid can access online (even on an Android™ smartphone!).
GPS Phone Locator. Helps your find your phone or your kid
No contracts, no activation or termination fees and no surprise bills. Kajeet is flexible, budget friendly and worry-free.
Kajeet's new news is that's moved beyond cell phones and to smartphones, and offers the following models: LG Optimus S,the HTC Shift, Samsung Conquer and Replenish. Parents can gain control of the phones and calibrate them to keep their kids out of trouble.
The GPS Phone Locator is also a new service, and may prove to be more popular than the new smartphones that are offered. Missing children and kids that fall victim to child trafficking are all too common in the news; what Kajeet has can help combat the problem.
Kajeet Well Financed
Does Kajeet have the financial chops to take on this new business? In a word, yes. Last year, Rick Bolander raised $82 million and positioned the company to work to adsorb its market and eventually live off the revenue it generates. It's a small company, but poised to grow.
Kajeet CEO Daniel Neal, with have made a new company that’s right for the 21st Century. A period where it seems that digital communications have advanced so fast, the common and at times hair-raising practices of teens seem to have gone unchecked.
Not with Kajeet.
