Kasey Kahne is 10th in the Chase standings heading into the final race of the season at Homestead on Sunday. kahne holds a 44 point advantage over 11th place Carl Edwards, and is 65 points behind Ryan Newman, who is currently 9th.
It's unlikely Kahne could move any higher in the standings than 9th, no matter how well he runs this weekend. 8th place Denny hamlin is 124 points ahead of Kahne. It's not mathematically impossible for Kahne to catch Hamlin, but it would require a great run by Kahne and a terrible end of the season finish from Hamlin.
So, for Kahne this week's race is about going for the win and trying to close out the 2009 season on a high note. Finishing in the top 10 in the standings isn't as good as winning a championship, but it's not bad either. Considering the changes and controversy at Gillette-Evernham/Richard Petty Motorsports since last offseason it's pretty darn good.
