Kasey Kahne ended the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season with a 17th place finishe at Homestead, but that was good enough to give him a 10th place finish in the season standings. Kahne's Chase run was full of ups and downs, and the final race was a microcosm of the final 10 races.
Kahne ran in the middle of the pack for most of the day, but near the midway point he was able to climb as high as fourth position on the track. Kahne's No. 9 Budweiser Dodge was struck by a piece of debris from Juan Pablo Montoya's car at one point. The debris, a piece of a brake rotor, gouged a hole in the roof of the car.
The season itself was one of highs and lows for Kahne. It began with a merge of his Gillette Evernham race team merging with Petty Enterprises, to form Richard Petty Motorsports. Kahne and his Richard Petty Motorsports teammates will merge with Yate's racing and switch to Fords for the 2010 season, When that announcement was made, just before the first race in The Chase For The Cup, several employees of in the RPM engine shop walked out. Kahne blew an engine and finished 38th in that race.
Kahne picked up two wins in 2009, at Infineon Raceway and Atlanta. The Atlanta win propelled Kahne to his 2nd career Chase appearance.
