KAFP seeks nominations for Kansas Family Physician of the Year

Is your family doctor top notch? The Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP) is seeking nominations for the 2012 Kansas Family Physician of the Year award.

The Academy, whose mission is to promote access to and excellence in health care for all Kansans through education and advocacy for family physicians and their patients, has extended its deadline to Jan. 16 to get more nominations.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to honor your family doctor,” said Carolyn Gaughan, KAFP executive director.

Each year the KAFP awards one family physician the title of “Kansas Family Physician of the Year” on the basis of describing the candidate’s most outstanding characteristics and contributions to community and family medicine, organizers said.

Past recipients, who are ineligible to win again, include:
2011 -- Dr. Robert E. Jacoby II of Topeka
2010 -- Dr. Victor Nemechek of Quinter
2009 -- Dr. Duane Fredrickson of Lindsborg
2008 -- Dr. John Atkin III of Yates Center
2007 -- Dr. Paul Davis of Wichita

Nominees must be family physician members in good standing, licensed to practice in Kansas, and actively practicing family medicine at least half time. More than 90 percent of Kansas family physicians are members of the KAFP.

To nominate a family physician for this prestigious award, the KAFP requests a letter of nomination describing the candidate’s most outstanding characteristics, and how the candidate meets these criteria:
  1. Provides his/her patients with compassionate, comprehensive and caring family medicine on a continuing basis.
  2. Is directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of his/her community.
  3. Is a credible role model professionally and personally to his/her community, to other health professionals, and to residents and medical students.
  4. Effectively represents the specialty of family medicine.
Online nominations can be submitted at www.kafponline.org/members/awards. Nomination letters can be faxed to (316) 721-9044 or mailed to:
Kansas Academy of Family Physicians
7570 W. 21st St., N., #1046C
Wichita, KS 67205
The winner will be announced in March. The KAFP will honor the recipient at its Annual Scientific Assembly on June 8 at the Marriott Hotel in Overland Park. The recipient will be nominated for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Family Physician of the Year award.
