An Afghan security guard has shot and killed 3 American doctors, as confirmed by the United States Embassy in Afghanistan. The incident took place at Cure International Hospital in Kabul on Thursday morning. The three dead Americans included a father and son, according to a Fox News report on Thursday. At this time, it is unclear whether the Taliban is behind the shooting or not.

The hospital where the deadly incident occurred is located in the western part of Afghanistan’s capital city. Two other persons were wounded, according to Afghanistan’s Health Ministry, who were both American nurses. This incident is the most recent in which attacks have been made on foreign civilians in Kabul in the current year.

The statement posted on the United States Embassy’s Twitter social media account stated that it is with great sadness that the Embassy confirms that three Americans were killed in the attack at CURE Hospital. It continued to state that no other information is being released at this time. Soraya Dalil, the Afghanistan Minister of Health also made a statement which said that two of the dead were a father and son who were visiting. Dalil’s statement also said that the other victim was a Cure International doctor who had been employed in Kabul for some seven years.

The District Police Chief in Kabul, Hafiz Khan, said that the gunman was a member of the Afghan Police Protection Force. The attacker was assigned to guard the hospital. The motive for the man’s deadly actions is not known. He was wounded and taken into custody as he was taken into surgery. Following his medical procedure, the gunman will be questioned by authorities.

Specifically, according to ABC News, five doctors had entered the medical compound at Cure International Hospital and were walking toward the building when the guard started shooting at them. That’s when the three persons were killed and two others were wounded. Cure International Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan is affiliated with the Christian charity Cure International and operates in 29 countries. It specializes in child, maternity health and surgery.
