Kabbalah 101.9: Sefer Yetzirah chapter 6: Draco and the Merkabah

Section Six concludes the Sefer Yetzirah. There is an addendum “The Thirty-Two Paths, which will be dealt with at a later date.

Section One

In proof of these things, and witnessing faithfully are the Universe, the Year of time, and humans, the Microcosm. The Holy One fixed these as testimonies of the Triad, the Heptad, and the Dodecad; the twelve constellations rulers of the world, the Dragon Tali which surrounds the Universe, and the microcosm, humans. The triad is fire, water, and air; the fire above, the water below, and the air in the midst. The proof of which is that air is a participator with both.

Here the author is stating that human Existence itself is proof that his analysis of the Letters is true, and that there is a correspondence between everything in the Universe. The referent to the Constellation Draco goes back to an Ancient Legend about a Dragon that guards God’s Throne. Why God would a Dragon to guard the Merkabah is unknown. Perhaps Draco was Leviathan, mentioned in many places in the Hebrew Scriptures, for example Isaiah 27:1.

On that day, the Lord shall visit with His hard and great and strong sword on leviathan the barlike serpent, and upon leviathan the crooked serpent, and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Section Two

Tali, the Dragon, is above the Universe, as a Monarch on a Throne; the sphere in the year as a Monarch of a State, the Heart of a human as a Monarch in warfare. Elohim made the states of opposition, good and evil; good proceeds from the good, and evil proceeds from the evil. Happiness is reserved for the just, and misery for the wicked ones.

The referent here is to Isaiah 45:7.

Who forms light and creates darkness, Who makes peace and creates evil; I am the Lord, Who makes all these.

Section Three

Out of the triad one stands apart; and in the heptad there are two triads, and one standing apart. The dodecad symbolizes war, the triad of amity, the triad of enmity, three which are life-giving, three which are death-dealing, and God, the faithful Monarch, rules over all from the Throne of sanctity. One above three, three above seven, and seven above twelve, and all are linked together, and one with another.

The exact correspondences to this passage are unknown.

Section Four

When the Patriarch Abraham had seen, and pondered over, investigated, and understood these things, he designed, engraved, and composed them, and received them into his power `Then the Holy One appeared unto him, made a covenant with him, and kissed his head, and naming him after his own Name, called him his friend; and as it is written, completed a covenant with him and with his seed forever, who then believed on God YHVH, and it was imputed to him for righteousness

God ordained a covenant between the toes of his feet, that of circumcision; and a covenant between the fingers of his hands, that of the Tongue, and, binding the essences of the twenty-two letters on his tongue, and God disclosed to him the secrets of them. God has carried these through waters, has borne them aloft through fire, and has stamped them in the storms of the air; The Holy One has distributed them among the seven stars, and has assigned them to twelve celestial constellations. Amen.

Supposedly, the original Sefer Yetzirah was written by either Abraham or Moses.
