Friday, Justine Sacco, a communications director for IAC made a racial tweet about her trip to Africa and the tweet immediately went viral; and the comments in response to the tweet leave many people wondering if Justine Sacco will be fired as a result, according to the NY Daily News. The tweet was deleted by Saturday morning, but it isn’t as easily forgotten as people attempt to understand what happened and why.

Justine Sacco tweeted the following Friday: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”

Justine Sacco was leaving from London and on her way to Africa when she tweeted and soon the tweet went viral and created an Internet buzz. In her job, Justine Sacco is responsible for promoting brands like Vimeo, CollegeHumor, and OKCupid.

It sounds like the tweet was supposed to be a joke, but no one seems to be laughing about it. In fact, most of the comments heard in response to her tweet are angry.

Early Saturday morning, the tweet disappeared from Twitter, then a few minutes later Justine Sacco’s Twitter account was deleted.

IAC responded Friday with this email sent to the NY Daily News. IAC media executive, Barry Diller said:

“This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC. This is a very serious matter and we are taking appropriate action.”
