Justine Sacco, a communications executive for Barry Diller, used social media’s Twitter to message insensitively about AIDS and Africa – and has now been relieved of her duties, according to the Los Angeles Times on Saturday.
Sacco, who is a director of communications at Diller’s IAC messaged via Twitter before taking off on a flight for Africa from London: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”
Twitter’s reaction was explosive. IAC issued a statement following the tweet in which it severely criticized Sacco by calling her message on Twitter an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of the company.
IAC’s holdings include Math.com and OKCupid, which are dating sites, in addition to Vimeo which is a video web site.
Last year, Sacco reportedly messaged on Twitter about having a dream involving sex with someone with autism. At this point, her Twitter account has been disengaged.
Prior to this job, Sacco was employed by Vince McMahon’s WWE wrestling firm.
