New York Mets infielder Justin Turner and utility man Willie Harris made a community appearance Saturday afternoon at BJ's Wholesale Club in Flushing to greet fans and sign autographs. Over 100 people attended the event, which was co-sponsored by radio station Z-100. In addition to meeting the two Mets players, fans had the opportunity to win tickets to future Mets games and greet the always popular Mr. Met.
Turner, the National League Rookie of the Month for May, took a moment during a break from signing to discuss his feelings about playing in New York. "It's awesome playing in New York. The fans are great baseball people and they love the game and they love to win," said Turner. The humble rookie has enjoyed the support of the fans. "So far, I've been having a little bit of success and it's been nice to hear the cheers."
Harris, who was subject to rumors of being released when he batted .188 in May, has responded with a .286 average in June, filling in at all three outfield spots and third base in David Wright's absence. Despite his earlier struggles, Harris enjoys the honesty of the New York faithful. "The fans let you know when you're playing well and when you're playing bad. I like that. When you are playing well, they're behind you and when you are not playing so well, they let you know that also."
