The film received mixed reviews from critics and had low attendance for a Clint Eastwood film.
The end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 have been filled with both music and movie projects for Timberlake. He began working on his third solo album,"The 20/20 Experience,"in June 2012.Timberlake announced his return to the music arena in January 2013 and soon released the new album's lead single, "Suit & Tie," featuring artist Jay-Z. His first movie project this year was "Inside Llewyn Davis,"an American drama written and directed byJoel and Ethan Coen. The film stars Oscar Isaac,Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake and tells the story of a singer-songwriter who is part of New York's folk-music scene in 1961. "Inside Llewyn Davis"was inspired by the cultural disconnection within a New York-based music scene in which the songs seemed to come from all parts of the United States except New York.The movie's plot is loosely based onDave Van Ronk's posthumously published memoir,The Mayor of MacDougal Street."Inside Llewyn Davis"won the Grand Prix Award at the2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it screened on May 19, 2013, and will travel the festival circuit before opening in December 2013.
Isaac, Timberlake, Mulligan, and others performed all of the film's music live. The soundtrack mostly consists of covers of old folk songs played through in their entirety. The film's music was produced byT-Bone Burnett, working with Marcus Mumford. Burnett previously worked with the Coens on the soundtrack for"O Brother, Where Art Thou?"
Timberlake second film project this year is "Runner, Runner." This film is currently in postproduction and is expected to be released in October 2013.The plot of "Runner, Runner" revolves around Princeton graduate student Richie Furst, played by Timberlake, who, believing he has been swindled, decides to travel to Costa Rica to confront famous online gambling tycoon Ivan Block. Richie is lured in by Block's promise of immense wealth until he learns some disturbing truths about his potential benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie into helping bring down Block, Richie truly faces his biggest gamble ever—attempting to outwit both Block and the FBI, who are both closing in on him.
Justin Timberlake has recently become involved in a third film project for 2013. The film is currently in the earliest stages of casting. A romantic comedy, "The Last Drop," is expected to star Timberlake as the lead character. Timberlake's character will be an alcoholic working as a restaurant critic for"New York Magazine" who falls in love with a young woman and comes to realize that he must overcome his alcoholism in order to have a relationship with her.
