There is no doubt that one of Justin Timberlake’s musical influences was, and still is, Michael Jackson. Through to modernized technology, Timberlake has gotten his chance duet with the pop star, who died in 2009. The “Not A Bad Thing” singer made his dream come true in making a song with Jackson and on Wednesday he debuted the musical video for their duet together as a visual tribute to one of music’s great icons.
“Love Never Felt So Good,” the first single off Jackson’s Xscape album, features footage that will definitely unite many generations, past, present and future. Cleverly choreographed, the video includes clips from some of Michael Jackson’s more popular music videos. It also allows for Timberlake and the dancers in the video to dance along with the man who made dance moves like the moonwalk to popular.
The singers also sing along to Jackson’s parts in the song and while video cuts are very careful made when it comes to the two singers, there are glimpses of Timberlake mirroring some of Jackson’s smaller, more posed moves like the moonwalk or hand movements. Out of respect, Timberlake is seen in silhouette and never tries to out dance Jackson.
They also never actually dance together in the video with the use of hologram, which may have made the video more about Timberlake and less about Jackson. The “Love Never Felt So Good” has two versions. There is one version with just Michael Jackson and the one newly released one on Wednesday featuring Timberlake.
How did Justin Timberlake become a part to the project? According to Timbaland, who serves as the executive producer of the album, Timberlake was chosen to appear on the album because of his appeal to the younger generation. He told MTV News
I’m like, The kids are gonna flock to this one. People don’t know ‘Off The Wall’ like they know ‘SexyBack.’ So, this got more feel like if it was ‘Sexyback,’ but respect to Michael Jackson, this is how we gonna do it.”
As far as the video goes and Timberlake's presence in it, Timbaland says:
He inserted himself just enough in ‘Love Never Felt So Good’, and just added to what Michael was doing. He didn’t really do too much. When he came in, it made him look special, but it didn’t make him look overwhelming. It was just enough.”
The video definitely highlights the magic of the King of Pop, and the song proves that he can still grove and rock the music world. “Love Never Felt So Good” recently hit No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is sure to continue to soar.
