Castleton Lyons announced today November 4 that Justin Phillip will begin stud duties with Castleton for the 2014 breeding season. His stud fee has been set at $12,500.
Justin Phillip was trained by Steve Asmussen and, under his guidance, the stallion started in 32 races over his four-year racing career. Of those starts, 23 were in graded stakes. He won or placed in 11 of them.
He had a terrific win in this year’s Grade I Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga in August. He was lauded for a best sprint, winning by two lengths in a time of 1:08.59 for six furlongs. Justin Phillip also won the Grade II Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont and the Grade III Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn in fine form.
The president of Castleton Lyons, Shane Ryan, is excited to stand Justin Phillip. Castleton Lyons is looking ahead in this stallion’s career. Ryan expects the big all-American dirt horse will be well received by breeders. Castleton Lyons likes Justin Phillip’s abilities and pedigree since the stallion hails from one of the more active female families in the stud book.
Said Ahmed Zayat of Zayat Stables,
Justin Phillip is an awesome physical specimen. He’s as good looking as any horse we’ve ever had. We’re excited about his stallion career at Castleton Lyons, and will give him plenty of support to make him successful.
Steve Asmussen likes the horse. He said,
Justin Phillip is a remarkable horse. It is rare to see a grand looking horse with his speed and talent that is able to stay as sound as he’s been while racing at the highest of levels.
Castleton Lyons is making Justin Phillip available for inspection starting on Tuesday November 5, and throughout the November Sale from 10am to 2pm daily.
