Were Justin Bieber to be deported from the U.S., as a "We The People" petition asks, he would return to Canada only to face charges there. MSN has reported that the pop superstar turned himself into authorities on Wednesday on a charge of assault for allegedly hitting a Toronto limousine driver several times in the back of the head in December.

The events unfolded just hours after his attorney entered a not guilty plea -- in Florida -- to DUI, drag racing, and other charges. Bieber turned himself in at a Toronto police station.

Toronto police released the following statement:

On Monday, December 30, 2013 at approximately 2:50 a.m., a limousine picked up a group of six people outside a nightclub in the Peter Street and Adelaide Street West area. While driving the group to a hotel, an altercation occurred between one of the passengers and the driver of the limousine. In the course of the altercation, a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times.

[At this point, police said, the driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police.]

The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived. On Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, Justin Bieber, 19, of Calabasas, Calif., surrendered to police at 52 Division. He is facing the following charge: assault.

Bieber's U.S. lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said he expects the charge to be treated as a summary charge, which is equivalent to a misdemeanor in the U.S. Brian Greenspan, Bieber's Canadian attorney, was not available for comment.

After spending 90 minutes in the police station, Bieber exited via a back way to avoid the mob that had greeted him upon his arrival. He posted the above image to Instagram, with the comment "#confident."

He could be referring to the case, or he could be advertising his recent video by the same name.

The singer is scheduled to appear in court at on Monday, March 10, 2014, on this charge. The Florida charge has a Feb. 14 arraignment date.
