Pop star Justin Bieber signaled his support for the international internet hacktivist collective known as Anonymous by donning a Guy Fawkes mask in New York Wednesday night.
Anonymous is often identified with the Guy Fawkes mask, first made famous in the motion picture “V for Vendetta.”
Anonymous, and the iconic Guy Fawkes mask Justin Bieber wore Wednesday night, has come to represent a universal symbol of protest, an international symbol of hope and justice. The Guy Fawkes mask is a celebrated Internet meme that is inextricable from the phenomenon that is Anonymous, the nebulous and notorious international internet hacktivist collective that fights for justice.
Anonymous is notorious for targeting such villains as the Church of Scientology, government agencies of the US, Israel, Tunisia, Uganda, and others; child pornography sites; copyright protection agencies; the Westboro Baptist Church; and corporations such as PayPal, MasterCard, Visa, and Sony. In addition, Anonymous has played central roles in the development and promotion of WikiLeaks and the Occupy movement.
Anonymous, and the Guy Fawkes mask, became a prominent feature of the Arab Spring uprisings. As a result, the mask is now a symbol of rebellion against tyrannical governments and regimes across the region, and across the world. Indeed, many governments fear the power of the mask, and the Anonymous collective the mask represents.
