Justin Bieber's mom will not debate abortion or make a 'political statement'

Justin Bieber's mom will not debate abortion despite being a Christian, as reported on Feb, 8, 2013 at Yahoo! News. The topic has come up because Pattie Mallette is the executive producer of the film "Crescendo," a movie about a suicide and abortion attempt by Beethoven's mother, to be released Feb. 28. Mallette is promoting the film in hopes of raising $10 million for centers that help unwed, pregnant girls. Bieber's mom was 17 and unmarried when she got pregnant with Justin by Jeremy Bieber.

"The press has been saying that I'm producing an anti-abortion film and taking this big stance. You know, I haven't shared my stance with anyone and I'm not here to make a political statement, so there's been a lot of assumptions made," said Mallette. In her autobiography "Nowhere but Up," the 37-year-old writes about her own suicide attempt, struggles with drugs and alcohol, pressures to abort her baby, and becoming a Christian.

According to CRIHB, "nearly one million teen girls get pregnant each year," and "nearly four out of 10 young women get pregnant at least once before they turn 20." Pro-life politicians and other supporters have a strong hold in American society. Keeping abortion safe and legal is not something that pro-choice advocates can take lightly. Since Mallette is now a Christian, and since many Christians believe that abortion is immoral and wrong, it would make sense that some people assume Pattie's film is a way to add to the pro-life platform.

However, Pattie claims her only goal is to raise money for residential centers for pregnant girls. "The pregnancy center that I lived in is now closed because of lack of funds, so I thought it was a really important thing that they're doing to raise money," Mallette said.
