Justin Bieber’s legal problems continue to escalate. According to a Jan 29 story by E! Online, Justin Bieber has been charged with assault in the city of Toronto. Shockingly, the charges stem from an altercation that occurred on Dec. 29, 2013.

According to the allegations, Bieber and his entourage attacked a limo driver when the group was in Toronto attending a Maple Leafs' game. While his antics up until now have been rather juvenile, assaulting another person makes for a potential legal and public relations nightmare for Bieber.

While Justin has taken a well publicized trip to Panama following his legal problems in Miami, many were vexed when the singer abruptly boarded a plane on January 28th. However, now that question has been answered for the world. Yet, Justin Bieber showed no signs of slowing down. Within a matter of hours of addressing his charges, the singer was on a plane headed back to Panama.

The assault charge is equivalent to a misdemeanor charge in the United States, and if convicted, he could face up to a year in jail. Following the incident, Justin Bieber’s lawyer released a statement to the media.

The Toronto Police Service requested that Justin Bieber appear in Toronto today to face an allegation of assault relating to an incident on December 29, 2013...We anticipate that this matter will be treated as a summary offense, the equivalent of a misdemeanor in the United States.”
