On Friday, January 20, 2012, jury selection was scheduled in the trial of former Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Eric Williams. However, Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland asked Judge Michael Chitty for a continuance due to new video evidence that was discovered.
Williams is facing a burglary charge for allegedly stealing computer equipment from the county in September 2008. He also faces a felony theft charge that deals with a library fund that Williams is alleged to have misappropriated. He has flatly denied the charges. Judge Chitty agreed to reschedule the jury selection process until March 19, 2012. Williams trial will begin immediately after the jury is selected.
District Attorney McLelland blamed a case of miscommunication as the reason the additional video evidence was not presented. He told the court that as soon as the evidence was located, his office turned it over to the defense. He felt that both the defense and the D.A.’s office will need additional time to go through the videos before the trial begins.
