Tuesday, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the state of Arizona disputing the immigration law that is scheduled to begin at the end of July; the Justice Department claims that the new law is “invalid” and interferes with federal immigration and "must be struck down."

The Justice Department’s main argument is that this new immigration law infringes on federal law, and federal law over rules individual state laws. The Justice Department said that they believe that immigration laws are a federal responsibility.

The lawsuit was filed against the state of Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer and claims that the federal government has "preeminent authority" on immigration enforcement, and that Arizona is distrupting that.

The Justice Department asked the US District Court in Arizona to "preliminarily and permanently" stop the state from enforcing the law.

"Arizonans are understandably frustrated with illegal immigration, and the federal government has a responsibility to comprehensively address those concerns," Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday in a written statement. "But diverting federal resources away from dangerous aliens such as terrorism suspects and aliens with criminal records will impact the entire country's safety. Setting immigration policy and enforcing immigration laws is a national responsibility. Seeking to address the issue through a patchwork of state laws will only create more problems than it solves."

"The United States Constitution forbids Arizona from supplanting the federal government's immigration regime with its own state-specific immigration policy," the lawsuit read. "A policy that, in purpose and effect, interferes with the numerous interests the federal government must balance."

Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer has asked the Obama administration not to sue the state and interfere with the new law, but has stated that if they do she is prepared for a full legal battle.

The controversial law has already escalated a political argument across the country, and a federal lawsuit will escalate that even further. Last month, Hillary Clinton accidently let it slip that the Justice Department intended to file a lawsuit against the state of Arizona. For more on that story, click here.

Arizona's new controversial immigration law requires that police officers question a person’s immigration status if they suspect a person may be in the country illegally; the line of questioning is allowable if they have stopped the person while attempting to enforce another law…such as speeding or jaywalking.

Anti-immigration law critics say the new law discriminates against Hispanics.

Over two dozen government agencies have boycotted the state of Arizona because of its controversial immigration law. To read more about that story, click here.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s new immigration law will begin at the end of the month. Brewer met with Obama a few weeks ago at the White House about the law. For more information on that story and a video, click here.

i understand that it hurts everyone to know that a hispanic will the the work an american won't. i am an american citizen with mexican background and i have seen that not alot of americans are willing to work that is why the hispanics come and take others jobs. tell me when do you see an anglo or an african american out in the fields harvesting for minimum wage or lower. but, you do see them in the food stamp office forming a line to get federal help, yet they say that the hispanics take their jobs go work like any hispanic and will eat my words. yes, they might be illegals but they are here to work and some try to get an education. those are the people that make the usa prosper.as i understand in the past was arizona not mexican property so they are not really illegal they are in their mother land. everyone not native american are all at some point immigrants. look it up in your family tree and if you have other gens than native american you or your family were immigrants .
