I dropped in to the Active Ride Shop Burbank location and talked with Collin Cuevas, the manager of that location. We talked a little bit about the history of Active, where they are and what they are planning! Here’s that interview...
Hype- Tell me about Active?
Collin- We started way back in 1989 as a real small mom & pop neighborhood skateboard shop in Chino, California back when skateboarding was unpopular. It wasn't even cool small enough to be underground yet. As skateboarding grew in popularity and became more acceptable socially, it’s kind of everywhere now, we had lots of success with the people that work for us and it’s definitely made us who we are today. Right now we’re just in southern California from San Diego up to Ventura county. We’re looking to branch out to the east toward Las Vegas. We’re a small operation and expansion is definitely in the works but it’s more difficult when you’re a family owned business.
The Burbank Active location has a good skate community. A lot of the skate pros are from the Valley or Hollywood area so they provide a good skate presence as well as a balanced apparel presence. It varies with every store. They pretty much cater to everyone. The carry brands from Brixton to Crooks and Castles to Adidas.
It [Skater] definitely has become a look. Where as before, if you were a skater, you actually skated, that’s what you did! Nowadays that has become apart of fashion to where you can’t even ride a skateboard but that is a look now, that’s a skater look regardless of what you do!
