Macy's located 10200 Mill Run Circle in Owings Mills, MD (21117) is this year's home store for the SharperMinds Consultants' Shop for a Cause event. Since July 6th, shoppers have had the opportunity to purchase batches of $5 coupons that are redeemable for a 25% discount at any Macy's store on Saturday, August 25th.
Proceeds from the coupon sales will support SharperMinds Consultants' Annual Symposium on Dating & Domestic Violence and Inter-Personal Relationships. Although shoppers can go to any Macy's store to redeem their coupons on August 25th, the Owings Mills location is the meet and greet spot for anyone interested in learning more about SharperMinds Consultants. Staff and volunteers will be on hand on Saturday, August 25th to thank shoppers and distribute information about the organization.
As noted on its website, "the mission of SharperMinds Consultants is to develop tomorrow's leaders by sharpening their ability to deal with today's issues. SharperMinds Consultants are internally motivated to awakening the consciousness of tomorrow's leaders through a realization of core societal values and by facilitating positive thinking to ultimately lend way to a fruitful and contributive existence."
The brainchild of Caprice "C.M." Smith, SharperMinds Consultants provides teens and adults in the Baltimore area with opportunities to talk honestly and openly about dating violence, bullying, sexual assault, teen violence and other issues impacting their lives. Smith, a seasoned police detective, uses her years of experience investigating hundreds of rapes, sexual assaults, and domestic violence crimes to help families, teens and young adults in Maryland make better choices, so that they can live fuller lives.
"Our focus is education and prevention versus intervention. [Events like the Annual Symposium on Dating & Domestic Violence and Inter-Personal Relationships provide a venue for us to] facilitate conversations that are not otherwise had until a crisis hits," explained Caprice Smith
Raising funds and drawing massive crowds at program events have been a challenge for the group. "People really show up when there is a need but miss too many teachable moments," said Smith. She wishes more adults and youth would take advantage of all of the different educational services sponsored by SharperMinds Consultants.
One unexpected plus that Smith appreciates is the increased numbers of male mentors who participate in the group's events and provide insightful testimonies regarding their experience in unhealthy relationships. She is sure to appreciate the general public's support for SharperMinds Consultants' Shop for a Cause event at Macy's.
