There is nothing worse than losing a button. It isn’t like you carry around spares with you in your pocket or purse.
The constant opening and closing of buttons and the washing, drying and ironing of shirts and blouses can cause the small amount of thread that hold them on to weaken and fray.
A little trick to prevent the threads holding your buttons on is to apply one single drop of clear nail polish where the threads are in the center of the button. Allow the polish to dry completely. Once it is dry and set it will set that button in place for a lot longer time.
You can do this periodically especially for those shirts that are worn most often. We all have our favorites! It may be the color, style or fit of the shirt that seems to hit the laundry basket the most. If this is the case you will want to apply an additional drop every few months.
Eventually those threads will wear thin and the button will have to be sewn on again. So why not put off the sewing for another day and simply apply a drop of clear nail polish and postpone re-sewing those buttons since they are now set in place.
Stay buttoned up!
