Just exactly how far does God expect us to obey His Word? (part 2)
“Last time we were together, we began looking at two rather simple questions: ‘Just exactly how far does God expect us to obey His Word? Just exactly how far do our pastors, those who truly preach the Word of God as literally written in The Bible, expect their encouragement to lead us into following and obeying God’s Word?’,” explained the Reverend J.A. Layman, evangelist with Sterling Ministries, posited before The Lay School faculty here in Clinton, Tennessee. “The Bible, especially the Old Testament, is full of examples of God’s simple expectations, and man’s failures to obey them. Although Jesus repeatedly criticized the scribes and Pharisees providing scant few details as to why such criticism was necessary, one need only read passages in The Talmud or the more mystic Jewish writings (The Sepher Yetzirah, The Kabbalah, The Zohar) to get a clear understanding of the extent to which certain of the Jewish rabbis had taken their rebellion against God’s Word, His plain Word, and employed sophistry to effectively make God’s commandments null and void. Israel’s unwillingness to simply obey the covenant that their ancestors had agreed to when they met with God at Mount Sinai (Exodus 4:31; 14:31; 24:3, 7) is documented in the biblical record beginning shortly after their exodus from Egypt, and continued to be documented throughout their history, most notably in the writings of the prophets. In point of fact, it was their repeated disobedience to God’s laws and commandments that resulted in their captivity in Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar, and their eventual dispersion among the nations, both in fulfillment of several prophecies.”
