On Friday, February 14 People broke the story that actress Ellen Page came out as a lesbian for the first time publicly during a speech in Las Vegas. The actress was attending the conference for Time to Thrive, a group that promotes LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) lifestyles.
Page, 26, stepped up to the podium and said, " I am her today because I am gay" before giving a motivational speech about her life. The actress received plenty of support from fans and fellow organizations on the social networking website Twitter. Page said "I feel a personal obligation and social responsibility" to reveal the truth since she is in a position of influence as an actress.
The actress admitted that there are certain standards expected of people in the acting world, and those "standards affected me" which is why she has waited so long to come out. Page was born in Nova Scotia in 1987 and began acting at the age of ten. She won numerous awards for television roles before being cast in major motion pictures.
Her most well known film roles include playing the pregnant teenager in the indie flick "Juno" and as the architect in the thriller "Inception." She will reprise the role of Kitty Pryde in the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past" scheduled for a summer release.
