The Tulsa Junior Oiler Mites are hosting their inaugural President’s Cup Mite Travel Tournament during USA Hockey’s “Hockey Weekend Across America,” Saturday, February 16 at the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa, and Sunday, February 17 at the Oilers Ice Center (64th and Mingo).
The 6-team, round robin tournament features select squads from Denver, Colorado, Northern Colorado, Pekin, Illinois, Northwest Arkansas and San Antonio, Texas along with Tulsa’s own representatives. The 5 to 8 year old Mites are the youngest age level of youth hockey.
The Tulsa Junior Oilers are coached by former Oiler players Klage Kaebel and Derek Toninato. “There has been a strong drive to reinvigorate competitive youth hockey here in Tulsa,” notes Toninato. “We’re off to a great start this year, having played in Colorado and Arkansas. Now it’s our turn to host some of the best teams in this part of the country. The kids are learning. But what they can do is already amazing. They’re super fun to watch. We hope anyone who is at all interested in having their children try this great sport will come join us.”
Games begin Saturday at 6:15 a.m. and continue Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Consolation and championship games will be Sunday at 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. All games are free to the public.
Saturday night, the Tulsa Oilers will play the Fort Worth Brahmas in a CHL contest, where all teams in the tournament will be featured during the 2nd intermission.
