The Junior League of San Jose was honored last night at Mayor Chuck Reed’s State of the City address by San Jose City Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio. The State of the City address tackled tough issues that surround the city such as the need for deep financial cuts, city payroll cuts, city pension changes, city retirement compensation changes and possible cuts to the police force. Fortunately, the speech was not all bad news as Pierluigi Oliverio recognized the Junior League of San Jose for all of the positive work they have done in the community and the organizations perseverance during the economic downtown.
The Junior League of San Jose began in 1951 as the Service League. The Service League applied to be part of the Junior League and by 1967 the Service League was officially the Junior League of San Jose. Since 1951 the Junior League of San Jose, then the Service League, has been serving the greater San Jose area through volunteerism and fundraising. Last night’s honor from Pierluigi Oliverio is the first time the league has been honored for their contributions to the community during a San Jose State of the City address.
The Junior League of San Jose works hard to help young children enter elementary school ready to learn and thrive. For more information about the Junior League, and for volunteer opportunities, please visit jlsj.org.
