It appears that the UFC is targeting the 2012 summer for a heavyweight title fight between champion Junior Dos Santos and challenger Alistair Overeem, according to a January 4th MMAJunkie.com. UFC President Dana White didn't give a specific date but strongly indicated that it would be in the summer as he made the following comments:
"Alistair wants to take some time off. Dos Santos is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer."
Dos Santos, the heavyweight champion (14-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) hasn’t had a fight since he took the championship from Cain Valasquez in November on Fox. He recently had minor surgery to repair an injured knee and will return to training sometime this week.
Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) made his UFC debut last Friday against Brock Lesnar as UFC 141’s headline fight. His first-round win against Lesnar cemented the opportunity to go up against Dos Santos in a chance to win the heavyweight title. Overeem has a chance to make history winning both the UFC and Strikeforce heavyweight titles in addition to his other international titles.
