According to the Canadian Press on Saturday, Calgary native Gilmore Junio won a World Cup silver medal in a men's 500 metre speed skating race in Inzell, Germany.

Junio posted a time of 35.02. Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands, who won a bronze medal in the men's 500m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, won the gold medal by posting the fastest time at 34.96. Germany's Nico Ihle won the bronze medal with a time of 35.10.

Junio made headlines at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi when he gave up his spot in the men's 1000m speed skating competition to Denny Morrison of Chetwynd, British Columbia. Morrison went on to win an Olympic silver medal.

It was Junio's second World Cup medal this season. He previously won a men's 500m World Cup race in Salt Lake City on November 16.

The Netherlands will host the final two weekends of international speed skating competition. Heerenveen will host the World Cup Final next weekend and then the World All Around Speed Skating Championships in two weeks time.
