According to the International Skating Union website on Saturday, Calgary native Gilmore Junio won a bronze medal in a men's 500m World Cup speed skating race in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Junio posted a time of 35.00 seconds exactly to place in behind Ronald Mulder and Jan Smeekens both of the Netherlands. Mulder's time was 34.81 seconds and Smeekens posted a time of 34.97 seconds.

Junio meanwhile was eight one hundredths of a second faster than Nico Ihle of Germany and Artur Was of Poland, who were tied for fourth place at 35.08 seconds.

Junio made headlines at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi when he gave up his spot in the men's 1000m speed skating competition to Denny Morrison who came away with a silver medal in the distance.

There was a strong push by many to have Junio be the flag bearer for Canada at the closing ceremonies at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, but the Canadian Olympic Committee decided to go with Canadian bobsled gold medalists Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse instead.
