Junio should be considered as Canada's flag bearer for closing ceremonies

Calgary's Gilmore Junio might not have won an Olympic medal on Wednesday, but if it was not for his sensational act of heroic Olympism, Denny Morrison of Chetwynd, British Columbia would not have come away with a silver medal in the men's 1000m speed skating event at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Morrison was not originally going to compete for Canada in the men's 1000m speed skating event on Wednesday at the Olympic Winter Games because he fell in the men's 1000m event at the Canadian Olympic Speed Skating Trials in Calgary in December.

However, in an amazing display of generosity, Gilmore Junio, who had competed and finished in tenth place in the men's 500m on Monday, gave his Olympic spot to Morrison, who has won the silver medal in the men's 1000m twice before at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships and is currently ranked fourth in the world in men's speed skating.

Junio needs to be highly praised for putting the Canadian Olympic team first. In a statement, he made the decision "in the best interest of the team" according to Chris Iorfida of CBC Sports.

There is a strong possiblity that Charles Hamelin might win four medals at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and for that he should be considered as Canada's flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. However Junio should get strong consideration as well, because if it was not for his extraordinary decision, Team Canada does not win its tenth medal on Wednesday.

Why stop with just giving Junio the flag at the closing ceremonies? Junio's decision should also give him Order of Canada consideration too.
