No sooner did I blog about the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival than TCM announced Maureen O’Hara would appear—so much for last year’s declaration of retirement—along with Margaret O’Brien, Mel Brooks and Richard Dreyfuss. World premiere restorations on tap: Billy Wilder's “Double Indemnity” (1944), Orson Welles' “Touch of Evil“ (1958), and William Wyler's “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946). Plus Harold Lloyd’s “Why Worry?” (1923), with Carl Davis conducting his new original score. Passes for the festival can be purchased exclusively through the official festival website: http://www.tcm.com/festival.

Disney still hires A-list talent for animated films, but let’s face it, the great character voices of the movies’ golden age are long gone. Folks with the inimitable vocal characteristics of Sterling Holloway, Louis Prima, Verna Felton, George Sanders and Thurl Ravenscroft. They’re all in “Jungle Book” (available today in Blu-ray & DVD combo packs, in a variety of editions), and it’s wonderful to hear their voices once again.

The cast of this tale based on the Mowgli stories by Rudyard Kipling is headed by Phil Harris (larger than life as Baloo the Bear) and Sebastian Cabot (as Bagheera the Panther). Bonus materials include a recently-discovered alternate ending, a behind-the-scenes feature on Disney animation, a Bear-E-Oke singalong and “Music, Memories & Mowgli,” discussing the film itself.

Vittoria de Sica was a masterful director, so it’s no surprise he has such great screen presence in the starring role of Roberto Rossellini’s “General Della Rovere” (available on DVD from Rarovideo, dist. by Kino). This award-winning 1959 drama, set in World War II Italy during the German occupation, moves at a leisurely pace but the stakes are set high early in the game. Both the director’s cut and the theatrical version are on this digitally restored two-disc set, accompanied by an illustrated booklet.

“Decasia,” Bill Morrison’s avant-garde exploration of the beauty of decaying archival footage, has been inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. It’s now available on Blu-ray from Icarus Films.
