What a great way for adults to kick off the Summer of 2014, PLAY! Yes! That's what we're talking about! You're never too old to play! The founder of the Exploratorium, Frank Oppenheimer believed that playing around with things is essential to learning.

One should never stop learning something new every day, but on Thursday, June 5th, Exploratorium's First Thursday After Dark for June, the theme is 'Play'. 'In Our rapidly changing culture, adults probably need as much play [if not more] as children' says Mr. Oppenheimer, 'and using objects and concepts in ways other than they're supposed to be used is essential to learning'.

This Thursday you can test your muscle by powering a Ferris wheel pedaling a bicycle. made by artist Paul Cesewski. Check out your own heartbeat in Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's giant sculpture, Pulse Spiral. Make your own shadow puppets come alive in master puppeteer Daniel Barash's workshop. Try out Oakland East Bay Symphony's 'instrument petting zoo' and get to know trumpets and cellos. Make your own glove-a-phone with Explorables volunteers.

That's not all. Find out how kindergarten's evolutionary role shapes twentieth & twenty-first century arts and sciences with Exploratorium artist Marina McDougall. Discover the secret lives of exhibits on a tour with the Explainers. Try building classic toys like tops, oobleck, and paper rockets, or join in with the Tinkering Studio to take apart electronic toys, and connect circuits in imaginative ways.

As Fred Oppenheimer said, 'In exhibits obviously intended for play...all manner of lovely things are discoverable, even by the people who invent them.'

This evening is for Adults Only, 18 and older, please. Tickets are $15.00 for General Public, $10.00 for Members, and free for Lab Members. A ticket does not guarantee entrance to venues with limited capacity. That is on a 'first come, first served' basis. A cash bar is available, but be sure to bring ID, or you won't be served.

Get on down to Pier 15 this Thursday, June 5th, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM and be prepared to PLAY!
