Cool and refreshing on a hot summer's day. It's just-the-right sweet and silky smooth. Sounds like nothing other than America's most delectable temptation, ice cream. Well, you have an excuse to put away those walking/running shoes and head for the freezer for a serving of your favorite flavor of ice cream. What gives? July is National Ice Cream Month! This observed "holiday" was put into place by Ronald Reagan in 1994 and endorsed by the International Ice Cream Association.

So what ice cream flavor stirs your palate? Something traditional, like Rocky Road or Mint Chocolate Chip? Or, does an exotic flavor, like mango ice cream, roar up your appetite? Do you prefer your ice cream treat in a waffle cone or just right out of the tub? Do you need a stream of caramel/fudge sauce dripping all over it? Or, do you prefer your frozen concoction pure and simple?

Whichever way you like your ice cream, the U.S. consumes over a billion gallons of both soft- and hard-serve ice cream. Have a scoop, because consuming ice cream helps keep thousands of citizens in their jobs in the U.S. ice cream industry.

Chicagoland bursts with ice-cream shops, both national chains and independent mom-and-pop shops. Here is one in the Chicago suburbs and owned and independently run:
