In this week's new releases, we have Brooklyn's Finest where three different Brooklyn NYPD officers' lives are dramatically transformed in a week during a multi-agency drug operation and the oath they swore to uphold to serve and protect are challenged at every turn. Next we have the internationally acclaimed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which involves the coupling of a discredited and convicted middle-aged journalist and a young genius computer punk hacker with a dark sexually abusive past. Their paths cross and lead them deep into the wealthy Vanger family mystery involving the disappearance of a young girl nearly 40 years ago. Then we have one of Colin Firth's finest performances in A Single Man where his character mourns and cannot move on after the death of his longtime romantic male partner. Without any meaning to left to life, he decides to commit suicide and spends the last day tidying his affairs, making preparations and bidding farewell to the people he knows. Finally, we have the Greek mythical classic Jason and the Argonauts and Rodney Dangerfield's comedic soccer film Ladybugs come to Blu-ray for the very first time.
Written and directed by East New Yorker Antoine Fuqua, Brooklyn's Finest is a drama looking into one week of three NYPD officers' lives in the crime-stricken 65th precinct's Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Officer Eddie Dugan (Golden Globe-winner Richard Gere) is a week away from retirement, with nothing to show for his twenty-two years on the job. His family is whiskey and a prostitute named Chantal (Shannon Kane). The rookie Officers Melvin Panton and Eddie Quinlan (Logan Marshall-Green and Jesse Williams) he trains lack respect for him and their actions are disastrous. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke) is in a desperate situation, unable to financially support his ever-growing family with only his paycheck. His mold-stricken home is making his pregnant wife Angela Procida (Lili Taylor) sick, threatening to harm his unborn twins. As things become critical, he is tempted by corruption and desire to supplement his income with easily accessible drug raid money. Detective Clarence "Tango" Butler (Oscar-nominated Don Cheadle) has been undercover too long and his alliances have shifted to the drug kingpin Caz (Wesley Snipes), the man he is supposed to bring in. During NYPD’s Operation Clean Up, their separate lives intertwine one fateful night at the Van Dyke housing projects where the events will challenge their initial pledge to protect and serve as Brooklyn's finest.

Get ready to set sail with Jason and the
Argonauts to find the magical Golden Fleece.
The Greek mythical fantasy film Jason and the Argonauts (1963), with Ray Harryhausen's amazing stop motion animation, comes to Blu-ray for the very first time. Travel with Jason (Todd Armstrong), the rightful owner to the Thessaly throne, on the ship called Argo to the land of Colchis, located on the other side of the world. They are on the quest to find the Golden Fleece, rumored to have magical healing powers, with the help of Hera (Honor Blackman), the queen of the gods, and his crew, including Hylas (John Cairney), Hercules (Nigel Green) and Acastus (Gary Raymond). Before the Argonauts can succeed, they must face the bronze statue Talos, harpies, many-headed hydra and Ray Harryhausen's expertly animated skeleton army. If that was not difficult enough, Jason must be wary of Acastus, who was secretly sent by his father Pelias (Douglas Wilmer) to sabotage Jason's journey and ensure he never returns to fulfill the prophecy, reclaiming the throne that Pelias took from Jason's father King Aristo. Perhaps a chance encounter with the beautiful high priestess Medea (Nancy Kovack) will ensure the success of their quest.
New York City Free Screening: Sony Wonder Technology Lab (550 Madison Ave. at 56th St., New York, NY 10022) is offering a free screening of Jason and the Argonauts in its 73-seat High Definition Theater at 2pm on July 24, 2010. Getting respect is one big goal!
Just in time before the grand finale of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ladybugs (1992) comes out on Blu-ray for the first time to give everyone a comedic break. Chester (Rodney Dangerfield) is desperate for a promotion at work and kisses up to his boss Dave Mullen (Tom Parks), bragging about his younger days as a great soccer player. Thrilled, his boss coerces Chester to coach his daughter Kimberly's (Vinessa Shaw) losing soccer team with assistant coach Julie Benson (Jackée Harry). Fearful of revealing the truth of his lie, he convinces his fiancée Bess' (Ilene Graff) soccer playing son Matthew (Jonathan Brandis) to dress as a girl Martha and help boost the team's winnings. Unfortunately the perfect plan unravels when Matthew falls for Kimberly and Bess finds out Chester's scandalous plan. With his job and relationship on the line, what hilariously crazy plans will Chester concoct now to save himself?
Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, Blake Clark and Dangerfield's friend Chuck McCann all make cameo appearances.

Great info as always Annie.. Thanks~
I love stop motion and miss the days of real effects! Ladybugs was nice little family flick with the great Rodney Dangerfield!
Antoine Fuqua makes great urban testosterone flicks. His movies always look good too. I really dug his King Arthur with Clive Owen as well.
