July 4 fun for family

Do your creative's like to try their creative hand in the kitchen?  Patriotic holidays are a terrific time to put that creativity to practice!  With all the summer fruits available to play with right now, the kitchen can become a very creative art room....and create some yummy art!

Disclaimer: I have no personal pictures or examples of patriotic cooking, I will do mine tomorrow. However, I wanted to give you a chance to do the shopping and baking before Monday, if you decide to create in the kitchen this weekend!

The most obvious July 4 dessert is the Flag Cake. For most creative's, though, this just isn't much of a challenge.  Thinking outside of the box, they can try their hand at bunting. Let's face it, using blueberries, strawberries and marshmallow cream, they can make almost any design patriotic!!!

The idea to use pie dough scraps to make patriotic cookies is really cool!  That might be healthier than just eating those scraps!

Another neat idea is to make patriotic cupcakes.  A favorite recipe site with lots of patriotic cooking ideas can be found at Betty Crocker.

We all have a sugar cookie recipe, young creative's can have fun cutting out flags and stars before cooking, then decorating with red, white and blue afterwards!  Fresh berries can be affixed to the cookie with white frosting.

Do you still have a recipe for 'poke cake'?  Creative's can make a 'poke cake' using berry blue and cherry or strawberry jello and then create a design in frosting on top!

However you decide to celebrate this special day in American history, I hope that you have fun with your family.  We are so thankful to be celebrating the freedom of our great country, USA!!!

On a quick note, Michaels is hosting a Passport to Fun event today from 11am to 2pm.  You can find more information here.

Have fun celebrating and creating!
